functional ceramics
In my functional work, I aim for poetic utility. Clay possesses two primary properties that interest me: its ancient naturalness and its tactility. The making process is involved and bodily, and I imagine a transfer of touch from myself to the user, with each piece functioning as a conduit of this transference. I consider clay’s historical role in ritual, community, mourning, eating, and communicating – in these ways, even utilitarian work becomes meaningful and rich. I aim to make work that is not only aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to use, but also which engages the viewer conceptually and phenomenologically.
